Meet the Garmin® Instinct®: a GPS watch built tough for the outdoors

Garmin announced Instinct, a strong and durable GPS watch with built-in 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter plus multiple global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) support and wrist-based heart rate. In addition to key GPS data, ABC and heart rate sensors, Instinct includes built-in sports apps, smart connectivity and wellness data.

The Instinct is a reliable tool built to endure challenging environments. The Instinct is constructed to military standards (MIL-STD-810G) for thermal, shock and water resistance (rated to 100 meters) with a fiber reinforced polymer case. It’s built with a chemically strengthed and scratch-resistant display that’s easy-to-read, especially in direct sunlight. Plus, the fully vented silicone bands include two independent, removable keeper loops to ensure a secure fit.

While in the field, feel confident exploring off the beaten path thanks to the Instinct, which features multiple GNSS satellite networks to help track a users location in more challenging environments than with just GPS alone. Before venturing out, use the Garmin Explore™ app to plan the trip in advance and when it’s time to head back to camp, the TracBack® feature on the watch can navigate the same route back to the original starting point.

With built-in wrist based heart rate, users can monitor daily activity, stress, sleep and other wellness data1. Whether camping, on a training run or going through day-to-day activities, Instinct keeps track of heart rate, steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned and more. Hiking, running, biking, swimming, kayaking and skiing are just a few of the activities supported on the device. Through heart rate variability, the Instinct can track stress levels, allowing the user to be more aware of when physical or emotional sources may cause stress levels to rise.

When paired with a compatible smartphone, Instinct users can leave their phone packed away and protected while they receive smart notifications like texts, emails and other alerts right on the wrist. Instinct is compatible with Garmin Connect™, an online fitness community where users can track workouts, sleep patterns such as how much time spent in light, deep and REM cycles, and even compete in virtual fitness challenges. The Instinct will also be compatible with other Garmin devices including inReach MiniVIRB action cameras and dog tracking devices. Send and receive inReach Mini satellite communication messages2, declare an SOS, control the VIRB start and stop function and get dog status updates and alerts for viewing at a glance on the watch.

Instinct features a battery life of up to 14 days in smartwatch mode, up to 16 hours in GPS mode, and up to 40 hours in UltraTrac™ battery saver mode. It is available in Graphite, Tundra and Flame Red

Fusion Launches Revolutionary Apollo Series

Fusion is proud to be leading the way in marine audio entertainment. Building on their industry recognised True-Marine™ design philosophy, the new Apollo Series will forever change the face of marine audio entertainment and set a new standard by which all others will be created.

Combining creative design with technological brilliance, the RA770 is the flagship of the Apollo Series. As the world’s first purpose-built marine entertainment system featuring built-in Wi-Fi and a touchscreen display, the RA770 takes marine audio entertainment to the next level.

The brilliant optically bonded, full-color LCD glass touchscreen makes trying to locate the right button a thing of the past. Simply tap the screen to pause and play, or swipe through a playlist to find your favorite song. The stylish one-piece glass display is also an attractive addition to any steering station, with the option to install the stereo flush, or flat to blend in seamlessly with modern glass helms.

Fusion’s new Apollo Series also includes the SRX400 zone stereo, delivering Apollo’s truly powerful feature set in a compact, versatile form factor. Like the RA770, the SRX400 offers Wi-Fi audio streaming, Fusion’s DSP and PartyBus functionality.

“For many years our head units have defined marine audio entertainment,” said Fusion’s Managing Director, Chris Baird. “While there has always been an ability to add features, no one has created a paradigm shift in this space, until now. After listening to our customers and closely examining trends and innovations in other industries like touchscreen and glass helm systems, we knew it was time to change everything. We are very excited to introduce Apollo to the world.”

Harnessing the power of Fusion DSP, the Apollo Series ensures premium audio is delivered to all speakers in any environment, for the pinnacle of sound quality. With Fusion’s system approach, every step of the audio chain is optimized through calculations by their audio engineers to deliver a technically superior listening experience – without the need for you to have a technical understanding.

The free Fusion-Link app makes setting up DSP profiles simple. With only a few clicks, you can set up the preconfigured DSP profile to play high-quality audio customised for your ears and the specific listening environment. Precisely calculated loudness curves optimised for the human ear ensure quality audio delivery at every volume level, giving you quality, full-range sound whether the volume is turned all the way up or all the way down.

PartyBus is Fusion’s audio distribution network of the future. Engineered for those who value the freedom of musical choice, to play what they want, where they want, it gives you the power to command the party across the whole boat or relax quietly in a single cabin, regardless of others’ preferences.

The power of PartyBus kicks in when you add more PartyBus enabled stereos to your on-board entertainment system. Each additional PartyBus enabled stereo gives you the option to join Party Mode to play the same perfectly synced audio throughout the entire vessel, or to opt into Personal Mode to play your own audio source in the zone of your choice without disrupting the party in other areas of the vessel.

Providing more source options than ever before, the Apollo RA770 gives you the ability to play your favorite soundtrack via Bluetooth, Optical Audio (TV), AM/FM radio, AUX or USB, as well as having advanced SiriusXM features available (USA only) and being DAB+ ready (Europe and Australia only).

Being the world’s first marine Wi-Fi audio entertainment system, you can also finally stream music from a compatible device via Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), providing the highest quality audio streaming available. The Apollo Series can also wirelessly connect multiple Apollo stereos without running any cables, reducing installation time, cost and complexity.

Both products in the Apollo Series are rated IPX7 water and dust resistant from the front faces when installed correctly, to give you peace of mind when out on the water season after season. The RA770 and SRX400 feature a 4.3-inch and 2.7-inch display respectively, along with internal Class-D amplifiers for high quality output with reduced battery drain, making them perfect for use in the marine environment.

The RA770 features two auxiliary inputs, one SPDIF port for TV audio output, one Ethernet port, one USB 2.0 port for phone charging and media playback, one SiriusXM port, one Motorola antenna connector port, and is DAB+ ready. The SRX400 features an Ethernet port and one Motorola antenna connector port, and both stereos offer multi-language support, including English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch and Italian settings.

Fusion is dedicated to offering innovative solutions to enhance your on-water audio entertainment experience, leading the way for marine and lifestyle audio entertainment. Welcome to a new era of marine audio entertainment with the Apollo Series.

Like other fēnix 5 watches, the fēnix 5S Plusfēnix 5 Plus and fēnix 5X Plus are built for athletes and adventures of all sizes. These rugged yet premium crafted watches range in size from 42-51mm and all boast a bright, sunlight readable display. The fēnix 5S Plus features a 1.2-inch display, which is almost a 20% increase over the fēnix 5S, meaning users don’t have to sacrifice screen size for a watch fit for smaller wrists.

The fēnix 5X Plus is Garmin’s first wearable to offer a wrist-based Pulse Oximeter, which is especially useful for higher altitude activities.

“We are thrilled to bring exciting new features to our most popular outdoor GPS wearable series,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “We’ve added some of our most sought-after features like built-in mapping, music and contactless payments to each new model in the fēnix 5 Plus series, and with the introduction of the Pulse Ox feature in the fēnix 5X Plus, our customers can now have more confidence taking their adventures to even greater heights.”

Featuring wrist-based heart rate and all of the multisport and smart connectivity features of the previous fēnix 5 models, each of the watches in the Plus series will also include built-in map data optimized for at-a-glance navigation and location tracking. These maps can be used with the round-trip course creator that allows runners and cyclists to enter a distance they would like to run or ride, then select a route from a list of appropriate courses to choose from. First introduced in our premium cycling computers, the Trendline popularity routing feature will use Garmin Connect™ data to help users find and follow the best trails and running routes based on billions of miles logged by previous Garmin users. Runners can feel more comfortable knowing they’re going down a path or trail that has been previously explored by others.

The fēnix 5S Plus, fēnix 5 Plus, and fēnix 5X Plus will also offer on-device music storage, up to 500 songs, for phone-free listening. Every fēnix 5 Plus watch features multinetwork satellite reception, now including Galileo to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone. This is particularly helpful when adventuring in places without a clear view of the sky like deep canyons or urban environments.

Constructed with premium-grade materials, the fēnix 5 Plus series is built tough for challenging environments. inReach Mini from Garmin, a small but mighty two-way satellite communicator for any adventure

The inReach Mini, a smaller and more compact satellite communicator with available two-way messaging and a 24/7 SOS function when combined with an inReach subscription to access the Iridium® satellite network. Measuring just under 4 inches tall by 2 inches wide, and weighing 3.5 ounces, the inReach Mini can easily be carried in a backpack, boat, plane, or glovebox. No more worrying about spotty coverage or being within range of a cell tower – the inReach Mini works anywhere when using the Iridium satellite network.

For the ultra-light experience, the inReach Mini encompasses it all, from messaging to tracking to declaring an SOS. It can be used on its own or paired with a compatible device. The Earthmate® app easily pairs with the inReach Mini via Bluetooth to a compatible smartphone for access to unlimited maps, aerial imagery, and U.S. NOAA charts. The Earthmate app also allows all of the inReach features to be accessed through the paired mobile device, so a user can reach anyone in their contact list. The app will seamlessly allow the user to access their compatible device’s contact list for quick access without manual entry.

The inReach Mini also works with Garmin’s increasingly popular fēnix smartwatch line to send and receive messages from their watch with the device securely fastened to their pack, kit, or vehicle. The user can remotely program the device to send and receive messages with compatible Garmin handhelds, wearables or other mobile devices. For example, a trail runner can be off the beaten path and be using their watch to not only track their stats but remotely control their inReach Mini to send and receive messages. See all compatible devices here.

Pilots will also have the same ability to send and receive messages conveniently through their Garmin Pilot™ app right from the cockpit. Garmin Pilot leverages the inReach Mini’s GPS positioning to drive a georeferenced aircraft position symbol on a tablet’s moving map display. The device has the ability to provide tracking for those wanting to follow the flight, using the web-based MapShare™ page created for each inReach account.

Like all inReach devices, a user can hit the SOS button in case of emergency that sends a distress signal to GEOS®, a 24/7 International Emergency Response Coordination Center. GEOS will track the device which triggered the SOS, notify the proper contacts, and send the necessary emergency responders to the exact location. GEOS will deliver a confirmation that help is on the way and also continually update the user on the status of the response team. GEOS will also reach out to the user’s emergency contact and alert them of the situation.

Garmin unveils Ultra High-Definition scanning sonar

Garmin announced Ultra High-Definition scanning sonar, a new technology that uses a higher frequency range to deliver stunningly clear images and detail of structure and fish below and around the boat at greater depths. Clarity and detail of fish, rocks, brush piles, structure and beyond are redefined with this new scanning sonar system that includes Ultra High-Definition ClearVü and Ultra High-Definition SideVü sonar with frequencies ranging from .8 to 1.2 MHz. The superior ClearVü image clarity lets anglers see up to 200 feet below the boat – much deeper than other high-frequency scanning sonars – so fish really have nowhere to hide.

Scanning sonar is redefined with Ultra High-Definition as it delivers greater resolution by putting more power on the targets with a higher frequency range than before. To see what’s below the boat, Ultra High-Definition ClearVü scans with a downward-facing element that provides clear images at depths of up to 200 feet. For a detailed look at what’s around the boat, Ultra-High Definition SideVü shows clear images of structure and fish off to the sides of the boat. Imagery from the Ultra High-Definition system can be shared seamlessly across multiple networked displays so anglers can easily see the information they need at a glance from different locations on the boat based on preference or the fishing situation. Using the included extra network expander on the GCV™ 20 sonar black box, Panoptix™ all-seeing sonar can also be distributed to multiple networked displays.
